What is Cystic Acne?

Cystic acne is the most embarrassing and most painful of all the different types of acne. This can be attributed to the fact that the roots of cystic acne go deep within the skin levels. Cystic acne lesions tend to be a bit larger than pimples and are much more difficult to treat.

A cyst is a severe form of acne that is filled with bacteria, white blood cells and dead skin. The cysts form when skin pores become blocked by an accumulation of excess oils. Retention keratosis can worsen this condition. This is when the skin cells are shed improperly, causing the skin cells not to regenerate properly. Dead and damaged cells become an easy target for bacterial infections. The infection spills to the other follicles which in turn increases inflammation and redness.

Heredity and hormonal imbalance can be attributed to the frequent flair ups of cystic acne. That is to say that if your parents were afflicted with this type of acne, you will be too. Stress has also been known to be a trigger for flare ups.

Since the infection of a cyst is so deep seated, this type of acne takes a lot of time to heal and can lead to permanent scarring. Most of the time scarring occurs because the person affected by the cystic acne does not know how to properly care for their skin.

How to treat cystic acne?

It is usually best to seek medical treatment if you find that you continue to have cystic acne. It is the best way to get rid of cystic acne. A dermatologist may prescribe Isotretinoin which is effective for the removal of cysts and lesions. More commonly known and marketed as Accutane. Treatment with Isotretinoin or Accutane runs for six months and is taken in pill form.

Accutane works by reducing the size of oil glands controlling acne production. There are several severe side effects and you should only take this medicine as prescribed by your physician. It cannot be taken if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.

Another treatment that is extremely effective is cortisone injections. They are painless, and bring instant relief. Cortisone works by reducing the inflammation, swelling, and redness that occurs with cystic acne. This is also referred to as intra-lesional corticosteroid therapy.

Surgery and laser therapy treatments are also becoming more available and more widely accepted.
